The Empire State Manufacturing Index measures the economic health of the manufacturing sector based on a survey of nearly 200 manufacturers in New York State.
New York's Empire State manufacturing index fell 16 points from the previous month to -11.2 in December 2022, well below market expectations of -1.0 and pointing to the worst deterioration in business activity for New York state since August. New orders decreased slightly, while shipments increased. Delivery times and stocks have changed little. Labor market indicators indicated a moderate increase in employment, but the average workweek is slightly shorter. On the price front, input prices and selling prices rose at about the same pace as last month. Looking ahead, companies expect some improvement in business conditions over the next six months, but optimism has been very weak
